SHADOW

PROJECT

For this project we were required to identify someone to act as a subject to observe for 24 hours. The focus of the observation was the subject’s contact and interaction with objects over the course of this time, choosing and identifying one type of interaction as the focus of this study and then communicating the findings visually.

For my study, I decided to film my flatmate, who’s a chef, while he was cooking. I noticed that observing someone so closely, their behaviour and their relation with the space and objects around them makes you understand more deeply how they are, their qualities and their needs, finding out some totally new aspects of them.

I believe that knowing how to approach people to get this kind of deep understanding of them is essential to an architect. People are those who benefit from what an architect designs and creates, so they are the main focus of his interest. It is important to learn how to get into close relationship with them, while observing and understanding them, without being invasive or disrespectful of their intimacy.
