MAKING WEEK 3
Making week is a yearly event at Central Saint Martins, organised by BA Architecture, during which the pavilions for the final Degree Show are tested and prototyped.
The week-long experimentation process is engaged by both Stage 3 and Stage 2 students, which, collaborating in teams, design 1:1 prototypes that are finally presented at the end of the week.
The brief this year was to design a pavilion made out of ply and soft wood only, without using glue, nails or screws.
My team, after testing a diverse range of wood joints, which don’t require glue nor screws, adopted a slotting system made of pieces of ply, cut to shape in a CNC machine, to a 3-dimensional joint which can easily be adjusted and fixed to requirement. The structure works in compression and tension and is self-supported without using any nail, screw or glue.
